I find the symbolism used in old alchemical texts to be fascinating.
The lion represents mercury and the sun represents gold. In the original texts the lion has a green hue, but for the purposes of this project, I decided to go with a more traditional looking lion.
This is a slide top, hingeless cigar box. It has been cleaned, sanded, primered and painted. The outside is a green/gold shimmer mixed acrylic with the hand stamped and inked image of a lion devouring the sun on layered art paper decoupaged on the lid. The sides feature a medieval woodcut of the new moon’s face layered on art paper. On the front and back panels are large images of the Tudor Rose, also layered on art paper.
The exterior of the box measures 5 1/4″ wide x 6 3/4 ” long x 4 1/8″ tall.
The interior is finished in an antique bronze acrylic and measures: 4 5/8″ wide x 6 1/4″ long x 3 1/2″ deep.
